Port City TakeOver (PCT) was started by Bill Corbett and Mark Barrow in August 2009 as a way to bring the gay community together and socialize on a different level. PCT was patterned after our sister city Charlotte's "Takeover Friday" which started in 2005 by Dan Mauney. Suggestions are always welcome! Everyone is encouraged to attend! UNCW Pride was established on campus in 1986 as the Gay and Lesbian Association to meet the needs of the LGBTIQA community. For community members who identify as such, UNCW Pride offers an open safe-haven, resource center, and activist organization. General body meetings are held every Wednesday at 7:00 PM (beginning September 1, 2010) in the Masonboro Island Room - located upstairs in teh Fisher Student Center, across from the bookstore. PFLAG, Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays promotes the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is health and respectiful of human diversity. Palmetto Transgender Association is a statewide non-profit network of transgender organizations, support groups and their allies. They provide information for transgender support groups in and around South Carolina, assist them in their functioning and serve as a connection between themselves, other organizations and the public. They also operate a data base of professional services and other resources for the transgender community. Palmetto Transgender Association also conducts social and educational events throughout the state to create awareness and acceptance. P.T.A. will facilitate speakers to help educate and inform the community on a range of transgender issues and concerns and to serve as positive images of South Carolina transpersons and the LGBT community.
